Roy's idea was for a new kind of golf bag that would turn everything (literally) on its head.

The 'Carousel' concept held the clubs with the heads at the bottom and totally encapsulated them to keep them safe and dry.

Roy's son Ross (also an engineer) and grandson Mark (a budding engineer) built the first prototypes in their home workshop, and the seeds of Stewart Golf were sown.

Although it sadly never made it to production, its ground-breaking design and daring aesthetic set Stewart Golf on a path we would follow for decades to come.

The design language that we were using for the Carousel got us thinking about 'normal' trolleys that any bag could work with. What if we designed a trolley that looked and performed like nothing else in the world?

We were already adamant that remote control machines were better than 'single motor' designs for enjoyment on the golf course, but nothing on the market was balanced very well.

Therefore the design brief was to design the best performing, best looking golf trolley the world has ever seen. Easy.

The X1-R was launched and immediately caused a huge splash in the industry.

Today’s Golfer dedicated 2 full pages to the launch, calling the machine "half golf trolley, half Learjet".

This was the world’s first remote golf trolley, inspired and designed intentionally to look like a sports car; than a golf trolley.

Incredible coverage followed, with the X1R even appearing in GQ Magazine’s ‘100 Coolest Things’ list alongside the Range Rover Sport.

Roy Stewart lived to see the launch of the X1-R but sadly passed away at the end of 2003.

Engineers have innovation coursing through their veins, always questioning, always curious and always looking for better.

With more than 140 years of engineering experience between them, David Funnell, Ross Stewart, Jon Miller & Mark Stewart began work on The Carousel more than 20 years ago.

They have been creating, innovating and pushing boundaries every day since, and have no plans to stop any time soon.

This is the building where the Carousel was developed, and where the Stewart Golf X Series & F Series were designed and built until 2017.

From this building we built and shipped thousands of our machines to more than 30 countries across the globe.

The Coach House was originally built in c.1825 between 'Stanley Mills' and the mill owner’s house, to allow him to see his horses before making the short walk to work.

As a company founded, owned and run by engineers, it's in our blood to design and make things.

In an era where seemingly every product is imported from an anonymous factory in the far east, it was always our goal to build our machines in Great Britain.

The model pictured was Mark Stewart's reaction to the assumption that everything was made in China. The Union Jack machine was the centrepiece of our golf show stands for many years.

Renowned designer William Morris (kind of) said that everything should be practical or beautiful. Throw 'innovative' in to the mix, and the F1 has a clean sweep.

The brief for the F1 Lithium (short for 'the folding one') was to do everything the X Series does, but better and smaller. A specially engineered golf bag was designed with a rigid spine and integrated handle. This allowed the chassis to fold in three sections, allowing it to fit in cars as small as a Porsche 911. The F1 was the first trolley in Britain to use a 36V lithium battery as standard, and also featured genuine magnesium alloy wheels.

Emphasising our British roots had become increasingly relevant and important as the business grew.

The new identity was originally used as a 'secondary' logo but over time became interchangeable with the original ‘S logo, particularly in export markets where the British heritage reminded people of brands like Aston Martin, Jaguar and Bentley Motors.

Anyone who has ever had to handle an old lead acid car battery knows they are heavy and easy to mistreat or damage.

After launching the F1 Lithium, we searched for a technology that could replace the lead acid batteries in the X Series as well.

By 2011 and the X7 Lithium, we were the first trolley brand in GB to exclusively supply lithium batteries to our customers. The rest of the industry would follow suit over the next decade.

Another world first: The X9 Follow offered the combination of remote control AND Follow before any other brand.

The Follow feature allows for completely handsfree operation: levels of enjoyment and relaxation on the golf course were taken to a new level.

A totally new electronics system combining electromagnetic fields with Bluetooth control was at the heart of the new machine. Despite all this technological advancement, the only visual difference was the red antennas tucked under each wheel arch.

Integration of Bluetooth was a game changer in a number of ways.

More secure, more reliable, more responsive and with a better range: the X9 meant golfers could say farewell to carrying spare handset batteries.

The future was also now rechargeable with the use of a small but powerful lithium battery.

We're proud to be a real success story of British engineering and manufacturing. Stewart Golf is an 'Export Champion' for the British Government's Department for International Trade because of this success.

We export our British-built trolleys to more than 40 countries worldwide. From Sweden to South Africa, from Austria to Australia and everywhere in between.

We established our own subsidiary in the United States in 2015 and now every one of the 50 states in has golfers enjoying golf with a Stewart Golf machine.

A patented 'rack and pinion' system at the heart of the R Series Push allowed it to fold all three wheels in the same motion using a totally hidden mechanism.

The R Series is still the only push trolley to be built in Great Britain, by the same team that make our electric products.

Our machines have been available in the United States for almost as long as we have been making them.

In 2015 we decided to establish our own business there to help build awareness of walking golf, and of course our own machines.

Golfers in all 50 states are now using them.

With sales volumes continuing to increase, Stewart Golf invested over £1m in a modern new 10,500sqft home to take the business to the next level.

The decision to buy rather than rent was key. We’re building a business that we want to succeed in the long term, and that means we make long terms decisions.

The initial investment was just the beginning. We constantly invest in our facility, our products and our people.

The Q Series was the first new 'ground up' electric trolley design since the F1 Lithium. The brief this time was to reproduce the performance of the X Series, but design an architecture that would fold smaller and have a more reserved aesthetic.

The ground breaking design that resulted features a microcellular composite structure and a patent-pending, automatically deploying stabilizer arm.

The smallest-folding Follow golf trolley in the world, the Q was the result of doing what we always we do: listen to our customers and try to make machines that mean they get to enjoy their golf to the max.

Many remote trolleys have a stabiliser wheel that has to be fitted or folded manually.

However we think this is so vital to on-course performance that we went the extra mile and designed it to fold out automatically. Then we patented it.

We are often recognised for our products, our innovation and our business. In 2022 we were also named by The Sunday Times as one of the UK’s 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies.

This was in recognition of our rapid expansion between 2019 and 2022 where we grew almost 3x.

Also in 2022 alone we picked up accolades from Today’s Golfer, Golf Monthly, T3 Magazine, MyGolfSpy, Business Insider, Golf Inc Magazine and PluggedInGolf.

The factory we bought in 2017 is now covered with thousands of square feet of solar panels which provide the vast majority of the power we need to build our trolleys, and then anything left over goes back to the grid.

We have a growing fleet of fully electric vehicles, and not a single scrap of the waste that we do produce goes into landfill.

As we head in to our third decade as a brand, we’re launching a new logo to represent our future as a technology based brand.

Elegant yet strong, futuristic and modern yet somehow timeless, the new wordmark and icon have been crafted to epitomise the direction of Stewart Golf as we head in to the future.
